Urban Rain

Urban Rain

Rain beating down drumming on the windows

Tapping like fingers on old golf-ball typewriters

Someone writing stories on the rooftops

Rivulets on the outsides of the buildings

Tinkling like a thousand children talking

Gushing like a thousand children rushing

Meeting forming streams and little eddies

That spout and splash from nooks and crannies

Many people walking under brollies

With hoods and hats and caps and wellies

Hunched in coats and lifted collars

Parcels clutched or hands in pockets

Past the chattering in the gutters

Through the crowds at sheltered entrances

Where vapour rises from the breathing

And puddles splash with each foot beating.
